R.E.M. to release anniversary edition of “Fables Of The Reconstruction”

R.E.M. has teamed with Capitol/I.R.S. for the July 13 release of an expanded 25th Anniversary 2CD and digital edition of the band’s 1985 album, Fables Of The Reconstruction. The new edition features the digitally remastered original album, plus 14 previously unreleased demo recordings, cut prior to the album’s studio sessions, including one long-sought track that has never been released. The commemorative release also adds insightful new liner notes by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, with the 2CD package presented in a lift-top box with a poster and four postcards. On the same date, the remastered original album will be released on 180-gram vinyl.

Fables Of The Reconstruction, recorded during the winter of 1985 in London, England, distant in geography, weather and culture from R.E.M.’s Athens, Georgia home, represented a musical step forward for the band and its members, vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry.

Produced by Joe Boyd (also known for his work with British folk and folk-rock musicians, including Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, and Fairport Convention), Fables marked the beginning of a more narrative, storytelling lyrical style in R.E.M.’s songwriting, with its songs spinning vivid tales of everyday life in the American South.

Before going to London to record, R.E.M. huddled in Jim Hawkins’ Athens, Georgia studio for a few weeks, woodshedding and building new songs from fragments, including many which had emerged during soundchecks along the band’s 1984 tour.
In his liner notes, Peter Buck recalls, “The last day of rehearsal, I think with Joe Boyd in attendance, Jim Hawkins recorded what we had come up with. We spent about four hours recording all the new songs live, with minimal overdubs. I hadn’t listened to this stuff since we recorded it, and I’m kind of stunned at how good it is. My memory of the rehearsals is us scrambling to finish songs. The songs on both Murmur and Reckoning had been performed for months if not years by the time they were committed to tape. I remember feeling dangerously unprepared when we flew to London, but on the evidence of this recording we must have known what we were doing.”

“The Athens Demos,” as R.E.M. has dubbed them, comprise the new edition’s second disc of 14 previously unreleased recordings, including drafts of Fables’ 11 songs and three additional tracks that didn’t make the album. The three non-album demos include two early versions of songs that were later revisited by the band and recorded for other releases and one song, “Throw Those Trolls Away,” making its release debut on this new edition.
In the U.S., Fables Of The Reconstruction peaked at #28 on The Billboard 200, and its singles, “Can’t Get There From Here” and “Driver 8,” reached #14 and #22 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, respectively. In the U.K., Fables reached #35, the band’s highest U.K. chart position to that point in their career.

“It’s a personal favorite,” writes Buck, “and I’m really proud of how strange it is. Nobody but R.E.M. could have made that record. It took our four twisted personalities and the legendary Joe Boyd to make an album that character-filled and vibey.”

Outkast Big Boi to release “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty”

Big Boi
Big Boi
The world knows him as Big Boi -Antwan André Patton – one-half of multi-platinum, five-time Grammy Award-winning supergroup OutKast, whose albums and singles have sold over 25-times platinum in the U.S. alone. Now make way for SIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT: THE SON OF CHICO DUSTY, Big Boi’s first stand-alone solo album, nearly four years in the making and finally set to arrive July 6th on Def Jam Recordings. 10 days later, Big Boi joins the lineup at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago’s Union Park, over the July 16-18th weekend.

Big Boi is already back in the picture with his Def Jam debut,”Shutterbug” featuring Cutty, produced by Scott Storch, the lead single fromSIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT. Writing on the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog last week, Jozen Cummings elaborated on a few other tracks: “… the melodic ‘Turn Me On,’ produced by long-time OutKast collaborators, Organized Noize… the widely bootlegged ‘”Tangerine’ featuring T.I…. And the Lil Jon-produced ‘Hustle Blood’… complete with Jamie Foxx singing the hook.”

The tentative track listing for SIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT is: 1. Feel Me (Intro) * 2. Daddy Fat Sax * 3. Shutterbugg featuring Cutty * 4. Follow Us * 5. General Patton * 6. Bubble Bath Bobby (Interlude) * 7. Tangerine featuring T.I. * 8. Looking For Ya featuring André 3000 * 9. Turns Me On * 10. Shine Blocka featuring Gucci Mane * 11. King Henry (Interlude) * 12. Hustle Blood featuring Jamie Foxx * 13. Night, Night * 14. ADP (Interlude) * 15. Fo Yo Sorrows * 16. The Train Pt. 2 * 17. Back Up Plan (Go).

Big Boi’s signing to the Island Def Jam Music Group marks a reunion with the label’s Chairman, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, as officially announced throughout the media last week. “L.A. knows what time it is since I was a teeny bopper, so when I first started working on the record I talked to L.A.,” Big Boi told Mariel Concepcion of Billboard.com, referring to Mr. Reid’s near 20-year association with OutKast. The duo signed their first record deal with Mr. Reid, and his Atlanta-based LaFace Records, the label he founded with Babyface. He has been in OutKast’s corner since the creation of their first album, 1994’sSouthernplayalisticadillacmuzik, which was recorded when Big Boi was still a teenager. A decade later in 2003, OutKast released Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, their 5th studio album, a landmark double-CD containing solo albums by Big Boi and his partner André 3000, respectively. One of the biggest-selling hip-hop albums in history – 11-times platinum in the U.S., over 15 million worldwide – the album generated three Grammys (including Best Rap Album and Album Of the Year) and spun off two life-changing #1 hit singles, André 3000’s “Hey Ya!” and Big Boi’s “The Way You Move” (with Sleepy Brown).

SIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT is essentially Big Boi’s first stand-alone solo album project since Speakerboxxx. As reported by New York magazine, “he started working on his solo album on Martin Luther King Day … three years ago.” Now the wait is over – and SIR LUCIOUS LEFT FOOT walks amongst us!

MTV to bring hour documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough”

MTV is set to join hip-hop artist Drake in celebrating what will be one of the more significant summers of his life by premiering an exclusive one-hour documentary film, “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” on Wednesday, June 23 at 10pm ET/PT. It is hard to believe that Drake is relatively new to the world of hip-hop and has yet to release a full-length album. However, today all that changes when Drake’s long-awaited debut album, Thank Me Later hits stores and his status goes from an up-and-coming rapper to a household name.
“I have always been hesitant to share the details of my life with the world but for the first time I am comfortable and confident that you will love this story” – Drake

“Drake is a gifted artist whose authenticity is resonating with our audience,” said Dave Sirulnick, EVP, MTV Multiplatform, News & Music. “We are thrilled that he allowed MTV the exclusive opportunity to document such an important and personal time in his life.”

During the making of, “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” MTV cameras follow Drake’s every move as he performs his “Away From Home” tour at college campuses across the country while simultaneously recording and releasing Thank Me Later. The film gives the audience and Drake fans alike uncensored access to the rapper’s most intimate moments as he deals with the reality of his rising stardom and the responsibility that comes with it, the difficulty of creating a great live show, and the pressure to deliver one of the year’s most anticipated albums.

During the week of June 14, Drake will be featured on MTV 24-7, as one of the network’s PUSH artists. MTV handpicks an artist a week and uses its massive on-air and online reach to bring that artist to the MTV audience through live performances, music videos, interviews and exclusive footage, everyday throughout the day, 7 days a week.

Viewers will also have access to previews, deleted scenes and MTVNews.com on the days leading up to the premiere of “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.”

KT Tunstall to release “Tiger Suit” in September

KT Tunstall
KT Tunstall
Multi-platinum singer-songwriter KT Tunstall will release her third studio album, entitled Tiger Suit, on September 28th, 2010, on Virgin Records.

After a highly successful worldwide tour, the eco-minded Tunstall began demo-ing songs for Tiger Suit (a title inspired by a dream) in 2009 at the solar-powered recording studio she has built at her home in the English countryside. After pre-production at London’s Sarm Studios, the Scottish-born Tunstall traveled to Berlin to record Tiger Suit over the course of three weeks in January at the world-famous Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie’s Heroes, U2’s Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life, were made. Finishing touches to Tiger Suit were completed at London’s RAK Studios. The album was produced by Jim Abbiss, known for his work with Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Kasabian, Editors, and many more.

Describing the music as “Nature Techno” (due to its blend of organic instrumentation and electronic, dance-friendly textures), Tunstall co-wrote several tracks with A-list songwriter/producers Linda Perry and Greg Kurstin, as well as her long-time collaborators Martin Terefe and Jimmy Hogarth, both of whom contributed to Drastic Fantastic and its predecessor, 2006’s platinum-seller Eye To The Telescope.

Released in 2007, Drastic Fantastic debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and spawned the multi-week No. 1 Triple A airplay smash “Hold On.” Previously, Eye to the Telescope debuted at No. 47 and went on to sell more than four million copies worldwide thanks to multi-media exposure of its three singles, the Grammy-nominated “Black Horse the Cherry Tree,” “Suddenly I See,” and “Other Side of the World.”

Next month, Tunstall will perform during “WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun” halftime presentation. This marquee event will showcase the world’s best female basketball players under one roof when the WNBA’s top talent faces the USA Basketball Women’s National Team at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on Saturday, July 10 and will be televised nationally on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The track is the first single from the Chicago foursome’s self-produced fifth album, Asylum, which will be released by Reprise Records, August 2010. A lyric video for the song can be seen here.

“Another Way To Die” is bound to cause massive fist pumping amongst crowds all over the world, but there’s a brand new darkness to it as well. “Thematically, the song’s about global warming and how the choices we make affect the planet,” guitarist Dan Donegan reveals. “It’s a new topic for us, and hopefully it will raise a little awareness.”

In August, Disturbed will headline the first annual Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival. Also on the bill are Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Halestorm, and Hell Yeah. Tickets for UPROAR are on sale now

Fantasia to release “Back To Me”

Fantasia "Back To Me"After providing viewers with a sneak peek into the recording process on her hit VH1 reality show Fantasia For Real, Grammy-nominated songstress Fantasia will release her highly-anticipated third studio album Back to Me on July 27th on J Records. Back to Me will be available for pre-order on June 22ND at iTunes and Amazon.

Leading the way with the official first single “Bittersweet,” which is currently #9 on the Urban Adult Airplay chart, Back To Me is an emotionally charged album which features a sole guest appearance by Cee-Lo Green and songs written and/or produced by Ne-Yo, Claude Kelly, Chuck Harmony Rico Love, Jim Jonsin, KP & Malay. Also available for the first time as a bonus track is “I’m Here,” Fantasia’s signature song from her acting role as “Celie” in the Broadway play The Color Purple.

Comedian, actor and radio personality Steve Harvey also became involved in the album process by coming up with the album title after a recent radio interview with the songstress. “Steve Harvey suggested the album title and it describes perfectly where I am in my life right now,” states Fantasia. “I’ve willingly let the world into my life through my book, the Lifetime television movie and now the VH1 reality show. Now, it’s time to go back to how things used to be when America first laid their eyes on me on American Idol. I want to focus everyone’s attention back to me and back to music that everyone can relate to and enjoy.”

In 2004, the High Point, North Carolina native became the season three winner of Fox’s American Idol. Later that year, Fantasia released her platinum-selling debut album Free Yourself on J Records and became the first artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart to debut at #1 with her first single, “I Believe.” Fantasia’s second single, “Truth Is,” spent 14 weeks at #1, thus making her the first singer to simultaneously have two of the top three songs on the Billboard chart. Fantasia’s 2006 eponymous second album featured the #1 R&B single, “When I See U,” and reached gold status.

In addition to being an eight-time Grammy-nominated singer, in 2005 Fantasia authored her first memoir, Life is Not a Fairytale and made her acting debut starring as herself in the Lifetime television movie based on the book. In 2007, Fantasia continued her acting career and received rave reviews for her portrayal of “Celie” in the Broadway play The Color Purple.

2AM Club to perform on “Pretty Little Liars”

2AM Club
2AM Club
2AM Club will be performing a handful of songs off their upcoming debut album What Did You Think Was Going To Happen? (RCA Records) on the July 13th episode of ABC Family’s new summer hit Pretty Little Liars. What Did You Think Was Going To Happen? is set for release on July 27, 2010 and features “Worry About You” their first single. Filmed in Los Angeles in late May, 2AM Club spent all day on the top secret set, filming numerous performance numbers and mingling with the stars.

Fresh off their east coast run which featured a headlining gig at Gramercy Theater in NYC and their 5 show stint in Austin for SXSW, 2 AM Club are currently on the road with Chiddy Bang for a 12 date run which began on June 9th in Seattle and culminates in Los Angeles on June 22nd and then they head east for a round of dates with TVTV and Menya.

The 6 members of 2AM Club —singer Marc Griffin, emcee Tyler Cordy, guitarist Matt Reagan, keyboard player Dave Dalton, drummer Ian O’Neill and bassist Matt Warshauer, AKA “Sauce”—bring a diverse array of influences to the table (Jay Z to the Beatles, Duran Duran to the Beastie Boys, Stevie Wonder to The Strokes), effortlessly synthesizing the very best of all that has come before them to create music that is resoundingly modern.

One part Seattle, one part Bay Area and one part Northeast, the group came together in Los Angeles in 2007 and honed their skills playing the local college scene before heading up and down the West Coast, booking, producing, and headlining their own gigs. After recording some demos with Jerry Harrison—a former member of the Talking Heads and Modern Lovers—2AM Club played a now-legendary four-month residency they called “Tiny Porno” at the Derby in L.A., and word quickly spread that it was the place to be. They then picked up and transplanted to NYC to record What Did You Think Was Going To Happen? With producers Sam Hollander and Dave Katz (Boys Like Girls, Katy Perry, Gym Class Heroes).
