CORPORATE LINE: The STAR TREK franchise continues with its fifth spinoff television series, ENTERPRISE. Set in the 22nd century (100 years before the stewardship of Captain Kirk), the prequel series charts the intergalactic adventures of the first humans to explore the far reaches of outer space on the eponymous Starship Enterprise NX-01. Ship commander Captain Jonathan Archer (QUANTUM LEAP’s Scott Bakula) leads his crew on a pioneering mission to chart new planets and alien civilizations at a time when the United Federation of Planets is in its infancy. John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park, and Connor Trinneer costar as Bukula’s intrepid crew. This collection includes every episode from the series’ fourth and final season, which attempts to tie up loose threads and storylines from previous STAR TREK incarnations.
THE SHOW: The fourth season of Enterprise was easily the best of all Enterprise seasons. If executive Producer Manny Coto didn’t have to fix all the loose ends from the previous season the fourth season would have been near perfect.
The fourth season did a great job of creating new story arcs that would last a few episodes. The most interesting is the story of Augments—which are genetically engineered humans. Some of the stories even connect to the original series. We aren’t just dumped into a show with now sense of time or place. Another interesting story puts us into a battle with the Vulcan’s. “In A Mirror” is a fun episode where we go into an alternate universe where everyone is evil.
DVD FEATURES:
There are over 3 hours of special features—A real boon for Trek fans. The commentaries range from the usual audio commentaries and then there are some text commentaries. The text commentaries take patience to get through.
“Enterprise moments, Season 4” – Some of the best clips with commentary.
“Inside the Mirror” episodes – A feature that covers the series best episode.
“Enterprise secrets” – No real secrets—more behind-the-scenes than anything else.
“Visual effects magic” – Anyone that likes to see visual effects being create will enjoy this.
“That’s a wrap” – A copy of the cast party.
“Links to the legacy” – Shows how this season connects to the original Star Trek.
“Deleted scenes and outtakes” – Some of the discs have deleted scenes. They don’t add a lot to the episodes—but as all deleted scenes they are great for the curious.
Finally there is a photo gallery for those who need every bonus imaginable.
FRANKLY: The final episode “These Are The Voyages…” is written by Berman and Braga is horrible—truly an embarrassment. Had this been part of an original series predating the original Star Trek we might have never seen another Star Trek episode ever again. It’s shameful. Thankfully it’s easy forgotten—but doesn’t do justice to this fantastic season.
