D’Angelo – Voodoo

D'Angelo
Artist: D’Angelo
Title: Voodoo
Label: Virgin
Rating: 8/10

D’Angelo knows that sex sells, but he doesn’t always play the angles. “Playa Playa” has the air of a smoky bar room, a man crooning to calm the nerves of all. Method Man and Redman visit the school of R&B as they drop something heavy on “Left & Right” and D’Angelo shines his brightest.

D’Angelo makes songs that just don’t allow you to skip ahead. You have to absorb his passionate lyrics and honey-flavored voice. And he knows how to spread sexual innuendo without getting too graphic. “The Root” has sex written all over it, but you’d never know it by reading the lyrics. “Feel Like Makin’ Love” isn’t so subtle.

Fully of funky beats and beautiful vocals, this album offers you a dose of R&B the way it’s meant to be played, though on occasion some of the songs maintain the course too long. The mellow flavor is fine, but can get boring when you get it song after song. The album’s dynamic is its only downfall. If you need a mood inducing record, look no further than this audible love elixir.
