Corporate Line: Michelle Williams now utilizes those very same attributes–propelled by her angelic, songbird-like vocals–to enter the next phase of her solo music-making with her sophomore release, Do You Know.
The Good:
“Purpose In Your Soul” – Williams sings with conviction and it’s her belief that takes an average song to heights not possible.
“Never Be The Same” – Williams brings an old soul flavor alongside modern day sensibilities. It’s a wonderful mixture – it doesn’t hurt that her voice is smooth as honey poured on silk.
The Average:
“The Incident” – The song is just plain sexy and then comes the chorus. The chorus is painful. Williams gives it a go even while it isn’t working.
“Love thang” – Nothing about Williams’ voice says she needs help from a producer even as they over-produce this song.
“Do You Know” – A lack of interesting lyrics are covered up by Williams’ gorgeous voice.
The Ugly:
“Rescue My Heart” – There is nothing in this filler, but filler. No sense, no lyrics, no emotion.
Frankly: What’s most unfortunate is that Williams has the tools to make a phenomenal solo release minus great songs. Do You Know falls off sharply after the first few songs. Michelle Williams is at her best when she avoids the ballads. For some reason when she takes it down a notch the song takes a nose dive. Williams knows how to make you feel good – she should stick with that.
