Wilshire – New Universe

Artist: Wilshire
Title: New Universe
Label: Columbia
Rating: 7.5/10

Company Line: “We called the album New Universe because it represents us taking charge of our own music after years of playing backup for everyone else,” says Lori Wilshire, one half of the singer-songwriter duo Wilshire (rhymes with “fire”). “We were trying to make our thing happen on the side, but it wasn’t accepted because it was pop music and we happened to be in Nashville. So we packed up everything we owned and moved to L.A. We had no idea how we were gonna pay the bills, but we had this dream inside of us.”

The Good:
“In Your Arms” – A ballad that might get a few wedding day nods.
“When” – Good message and a hook that you won’t soon forget.
“Tonight” – Grandiose and undeniable.

The Marginal:
“Special” – Could be something from the 80’s. The sound of Journey almost split me in two.
“Turn It Around” – I’m not sure what to make of this as it sounds like a pop rock hit from another era.
“Without You” – Continues in their adult contemporary pop.
“I Know What You Did” – Good hook and verse but they sound like a No Doubt cover group.

The Ugly:
Nada.

Frankly: Wilshire has a knack for what they do. They write good adult contemporary pop songs that should be hitting an wedding or waiting room near you.
