Wilco – Summer Teeth

Wilco
Artist: Wilco
Title: Summer Teeth
Label: Reprise
Rating: 8.5/10

Wilco’s last album, Being There, was successful and received some rave reviews, but their new album will definitely put them on the map. Summer Teeth is refreshing. It is an outstanding effort from the boys in Wilco. The songs written for this record are lyrical masterpieces that impress themselves upon your thoughts. Each one plays to your emotional state for the day. If your heart is hurting, it can be cured and if you need a boost, you’ll find it here. The band took a new approach in writing songs and had no outside help from any big name producers. Wilco came out with a solid final product.

The first three songs are the real champions. The opening track, “Can’t Stand It”, puts on display Wilco’s talent. One can hear the handful of instruments used on this song from piano and hammond organ to guitars and drums to various synthesizers. The next song, “She’s A Jar”, is a poetic harmony about the deconstruction of love that can happen in all our lives. The opening lyrics have not left my thoughts for days. “She’s a jar/ with heavy lid/my pop quiz kid/ a sleepy kisser/ a pretty wore/ with feelings hid/she begs me not to miss her”. The acoustic guitar, harmonica, and synthesizer are the fitting complement to Jeff Tweedy’s voice. “A Shot In the Arm” had the same effect on me and I can’t stop singing it. The convincing voice of Tweedy during this song leaves me a victim. “The ashtray says/you were up all night”
