The G funk is back and better than ever. Warren G.’s latest release, I Want It All, was almost six years in the making. That is a long time to be out of the swing of it, but Warren G. hasn’t slipped. No longer known just for his family ties (his brother is producer Dr. Dre), Warren G. doesn’t have to wrestle with his own identity as an artist. He’s won the fight.
The first single, “I Want It All”, is great. Mack 10 jumps onto the track and lights a fire. “Gangsta Love” is good, as are the two tracks that follow, but when “You Never Know”, featuring G.’s boyhood friend Snoop Dogg, comes on, you quickly realize that, aside from the title track, this one is the best. Reel Tight adds a great melody, offering a sensitive side. Speaking of sensitive, Warren G. dedicates a track to his mother, “My Momma (Ola Mae)”. This is one of the few tracks not featuring another artist, and that is just the way it should be. So what comes right after a track dedicated to his mom? “G-Spot”. Hope momma skips over this track.
Need to get hyped up? “We Got That” will do the job. You get a ruff ride with Eve, and Drag-on and Shadow walk the rhyme line with Warren G. “Dope Beat” is a cool look at G.’s teenage years. Snoop makes another appearance on “Game Don’t Wait”. Snoop sounds better on G.’s record than he does on his own. Perhaps the most anticipated track was “If We Give You A Chance”, with the amazing Slick Rick. If Slick Rick doesn’t have the smoothest flow ever, I don’t know who does. Warren G. did us a favor by bringing in Slick Rick, but even he couldn’t save this song.
Warren G. proves that even after half a decade away, he can come back and be as powerful as any MC out there. Warren G. wants it all and with his latest effort he just might get it.
