Rufus Wainwright – Want Two

Rufus Wainwright
Artist: Rufus Wainwright
Title: Want Two
Label: Geffen
Rating: 7/10

CORPORATE LINE: Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, called an “as-yet unheralded American treasure” by Sir Elton John, is set to release “Want Two,” his new DreamWorks/Geffen CD and fourth of his career.

The package also includes an extensive 20-track DVD feature. “Want Two” arrives in stores November 16. The 12-track CD comes on the heels of Wainwright’s acclaimed “Want One” from 2003. The new one continues the themes explored on the previous recording, though Wainwright has said “Want Two” contains “the more daunting tracks, the operatic, weird stuff, and some heavy numbers that relate to my classical sensibilities.”

THE GREAT:
“Agnus Dei” – Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard Rufus Wainwright sing—or any pop singer for that matter. If this doesn’t prove he has one of the most amazing voices in music then there is nothing else to say.
“The One You Love” – This is a catchy and a simply gorgeous song that makes you happy that someone out there is making music that still moves us.
“Waiting For A Dream” – Maybe we love this song too much—but how can you deny Wainwright’s ability to make a simple song and make it gorgeous.

THE AVERAGE:
“Little Sister” – Rufus goes after a more classical sound.
“Hometown Waltz” – A curious song.
“Gay Messiah” – A wry humor that only Wainwright can bring to music. “Better pray for yourself”

THE BAD:
Nothing.

FRANKLY: Rufus Wainwright is certainly a very eccentric artist. Who else would sing “Agnus Dei,” throw in some classical music, and then a waltz? Certainly no one who was afraid of not getting a single on radio Wainwright cares little about radio and MTV and only for the art that he makes. It’s wonderful to know that someone still cares about the art of music and not simple as the road to fortune and fame.
