Corporate Line: Pawn Shoppe Heart is the major label debut album from The Von Bondies, the Detroit-based quartet whose provocative persona, unerring instincts and alluring approach to the essentials of great modern music have elevated their status as one of today’s most influential and innovative young bands after just one independent release.
The Good:
“C’Mon C’Mon” – If the song were a little longer this simple, but straight to the point rock song might be a single.
“Pawn Shoppe Heart” – If the Von Bondies gave us more eight-minute songs like this then the tide might change in their direction.
The Average:
“No Regrets” – Odd, yet intriguing.
“Crawl Through The Darkness” – The Von Bondies aren’t crafting a new style-–but it works because its not the same old thing.
“Broken Man”- Not bad, not great-–again interest perhaps because it doesn’t sound like everyone else.
The Ugly:
“Tell Me What You See” – The backup singers kill this song.
“Not That Social” – The female vocalist is half as interesting.
Frankly: The Von Bondies sound more unique than they truly are. However, they’ve struck in the middle of a time where rock is full of posers and groups that can’t find their own sound. The Von Bondies give us a sound that isn’t full of the monotony and clichés that America is so tired of hearing. Pawn Shoppe Heart isn’t a classic although it’s certainly worth a listen.
