Velvet Belly is from an isolated coastal town in Norway called Kristiansand. That fact has no real pertinence to this review, or didn’t until I heard the track “Easy”. It reminds me of beautiful stretches of land and water. It’s lighter than air and floats like a butterfly.
Looking at the album insert and press material, you see that the focus is on singer and lyricist Anne Marie Almedal, but listening to “Ostercatcher” you can’t help but fall in love with the music that builds well after the words are done. I enjoyed the sweet simplicity of “The Station”. Anne Marie’s voice cuts through me and finds its way into my soul. “Our Happiness” is another perfect example of the joyful pain and innocence.
Velvet Belly has all of the ingredients to be a smash. Though expansive, these songs aren’t for everyone. Lucia is often dark and brooding, but can also be light and beautiful. With many moods, there will certainly come many listens.
