With the onslaught of bands using symphonic sounds in their music, the fantastic cello work of Verbow member Alison Chesley risks going unnoticed. Just don’t think of them as a novelty act. While the melodies are strong and Jason Narducy’s voice is quite passionate, it is the deep chug of the cello that strikes you over and over again.
“Dying Sun” is bright. “New History” moves forward and injects some of Verbow’s persistent flavor. “Sweet Felicity” has a certain twang. “Garden” has a feel of something monumental.
Though musical boundaries were crossed back when the Beatles first introduced the strings on “Eleanor Rigby”, Verbow has a striking style that is certainly their own. Ownership of your own musical niche may not sound like much of a feat, but in today’s clogged market of overproduced and over-hyped bands, it’s nice to see someone carving out a trail off the beaten path.
