FILE UNDER: Nirvana wanna.
CORPORATE LINE: With producer Wayne Connolly in tow, the trio recorded sessions at a variety of locations in Sydney and came away with an album that has seen the Vines come full circle. Starting over, they simply have nothing to lose. There are no splashy production values, famous studios or endless overdubs here. But there are 13 tremendous new songs that veer from gorgeous summer pop to blistering garage stomp to scattergun punk to epic psychedelia.
THE GOOD:
“Take Me Back” – The only song that is nearly good.
THE AVERAGE:
“Anysound” – This is too much like Nirvana and that is easier to swallow than the fact that the song is under two minutes long.
“Nothin’s Comin’” – Once again, another attempt at being Nirvana. The hook is sweet and saccharine—but again the song is under two minutes.
THE BAD:
“Vision Valley” – Very tired and slow. For a title track it’s not inspiring.
“Don’t Listen To The Radio” – The Donnas make bad songs sound cool—The Vines don’t have the same luck.
“F**k Yeah” – scream, moan, and groan—you still aren’t Nirvana no matter how hard you try.
FRANKLY: Vision Valley clocks in at just over thirty-one minutes. That would be okay if it was full of great songs ala Green Day’s Dookie. The Vines haven’t found who they are or what they should sound like yet. The Vines need to find an identity and then write good songs.
