CORPORATE LINE: After a three-year wait, mounting anticipation and months of rumors and internal struggles, rock and roll kings Queens of the Stone Age are finally ready to release Lullabies to Paralyze.
Since the 2002 release of QOTSA’s highly touted Songs for the Deaf, the band has seen the departure of bassist Nick Oliveri and singer Mark Lanegan. For Lullabies, lead singer Josh Homme called in a little help from friends including ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, the Distillers’ Brody Dalle and Garbage’s Shirley Manson, to help fill in the gaps.
THE GREAT:
“Everybody Knows That You Are Insane” – Perhaps an ode to former bassist Nick Oliveri. The track roars through your speakers.
“Someone’s In The Wolf” – A wild psychedelic jam and floods right into another chaotic jam; “The Blood Is Love.”
“Tangled Up In Plaid” – Rips. It wouldn’t seem out of place on any other Queens of the Stone Age record and yet it really seems out of place here.
THE AVERAGE:
“Medication” – Fans might find this track eerily familiar to an older bolder Queens song.
“Little Sister” – One listen and its understandable why the record label chose to push this as the single—even though it doesn’t necessarily represent Queens.
“Burn The Witch” – A wild track that continues the uncertainty from one track to another.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: Queens of the Stone Age are lacking the power of previous releases. Sadly with the departure of basisst Nick Oliveri and David Grohl’s drums going MIA there is something missing. Thankfully Homme still brings the same haunting and burning songs.
