Corporate Line: In spite of the appealing name, the Nicetown area of Philadelphia is not a pleasant place to grow up. It’s a dangerous neighborhood full of drugs, gangs and poverty that drains the spirit out of nearly everyone who lives there. Which makes the story behind the Young Gunz moniker all the more astonishing. Despite the obvious violent allusions, according to Hanif ‘Neef’ Muhammad–who, along with partner Christopher Ries, comprise this up-and-coming rap duo–the term has more to do with basketball than the violence these childhood friends lived through as youngsters.
The Good:
“Friday Night” – The Gunz give love to Schoolly D.
“Tough Luv” – Glimmering production is backed up by a tough-as-nails attitude.
“North Of Death” – Young Chris shines with a track that is eerily similar to the Ghetto Boyz.
“Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop – F/Chingy – The remix is hot, hot, hot.
The Average:
“That’s Right” – Street-core that the boyz expect to make you feel their flavor.
“Future of the Roc” – Young Gunz aren’t exactly the future.
The Ugly:
“$$$ Girl” – Wiggidy wack!
Frankly: Young Chris is way ahead of his partner Neef. It’s a partnership not out of necessity.
