Company Line: Everything about Year Of The Rabbit emanates from a muted kind of mystique that zigzags through their unforgettable debut with the deftness of…well…a rabbit. You’ll never get the LA foursome to cough up the reason for the intriguing name, but don’t despair, the reward is in the music itself, 11 bleary-eyed but soaring blasts of melody and mayhem that frontman/singer/songwriter Ken Andrews has fastened around a hail of blustery guitars.
The Good:
Ken Andrews has had his share of great tracks. This new fangled group doesn’t have such luck.
Inbetween:
“Rabbit Hole” – Uninspired and blatantly trendy.
“Last Defense” – The best defense is a good offense. There is no sign of either.
“Hold Me Up” – The first breath of fresh air doesn’t come until the tenth track and even then it lulls you back into your coma.
The Ugly:
Teetering on the verge at all times.
Frankly: YOTR has the exact same sound and structure all the way until “Hold Me Up”. I dare you to find a track that you could easily distinguish from the others. Lyrically the songs are forgettable and completely uninspired.
Ken Andrews was wonderful with Failure and uninspired with On. Instead of taking upon a wonderful past and pushing that forward Andrews takes the approach of radio friendly and trendy rock and turns it all to mush.
