The Coral – Magic & Medicine

The Coral
Artist: The Coral
Title: Magic & Medicine
Label: Columbia
Rating: 7.5/10

Corporate Line: In a nutshell, for once here’s a band who make use of their different interests in every possible way – endeavoring to capture an energy, rather than using it as a mere template. Which is so refreshingly unlike so many of their elder contemporaries, so many new and recent guitar bands you’d care to mention, and will surely stand them in good stead for years and albums to come.

So I guess you’ll want to know more now. About the Woy-Oi boy? About life by the sea and all that? You’d best get up to speed then and catch them whilst you can. With their new album Magic & Medicine has only just got underway for one of the bands this year will be remembered for.

The Good:
“Don’t Think You’re The First” – The vibe is like the Doors toning it down a few notches – drugs still in hand.
“Billy McCai” – It sounds written for a television show. Quirky, fun, foot tapping; a great sing-a-long.
“Pass It On” – If your feet need to keep busy this is the perfect song.

The Average:
“In The Forest” – Crazy, sounds like a Led Zeppelin song for the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.
“Liezah” – Who can keep up with the Coral? They shift from psychedelic to folk without breaking a sweat.
“Talkin’ Gypsy Market Blues” – The blues have taken a few twists.
“Milkwood Blues” – Quirky – gives the impression of a jam session after hours at a jazz bar at 3 AM.

The Ugly:
“Confessions of A.D.D.D” – Doesn’t make sense or fit in.

Frankly: The Coral prove their abilities with Magic & Medicine. Only the record should have been called; Rock, Folk, Psychedelic, blues, and Other Things From the Kitchen. It’s a great concoction. If you decide to take the voyage then jump on now-it won’t be long before The Coral is it.
