The Corrs – In Blue

The Corrs
Artist: The Corrs
Title: In Blue
Label: Atlantic
Rating: 5/10

I want to know what was in the drinking water up there in Ireland because The Corrs might just be the best looking family I’ve ever seen. Not only were they blessed with beauty, but also a hell of a lot of talent. They sing, play instruments. I mean, what can’t they do? Well, for one, they have never made it in America. After years of dominating in every country outside our border, they are back with another attempt at America.

The first single, “Breathless”, is a solid pop song. It’s different from previous releases that sounded very generic and unenthusiastic. They’ve again done the thing that bothered me with previous releases in that they have a handful of producers for one album. That usually spells doom for an artist. You almost always get the feeling that the album lacks cohesion as the chemistry changes track to track. In Blue does have those moments, but not nearly as much as previous release Talk On Corners.

One thing I haven’t heard from The Corrs before is an all out dance track. “Give Me A Reason” works hard at that; it’s not going to burn up the dance charts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I heard it in a nightclub on occasion. “Radio” has a great groove, but the hook is lacking. “Irresistible” picks up where “Radio” falls off and puts together a potential hit single. And if you hear a similarity to Shania Twain, don’t be surprised. Mutt Lange (Shania’s husband) had his hands all over this track. “All The Love In The World” has the Mutt Lange production quality as well, but sounds too Diane Warren for me to enjoy. I’m just getting so sick of these cookie cutter songs.

Some of the songs are unlistenable. The album starts off hot and just falls apart somewhere around track three, later picking up and then dying again. “No More Cry” comes in as track eleven and is quite peppy, but not entirely good. “Give It All Up” is track thirteen and very nice. There is no doubt the songs are spread out well; it’s just too bad that this album could have been fantastic had it been six or so tracks shorter.
