I would have to say that Cutters writes more superior slower progressing tunes than most average rock bands do today. Their more relaxed tracks seem to have stronger music and bigger soundscapes than their accelerated tunes. There is no single musical mastermind behind the operation of Sonic Wave Love; each of the band members contributed an equal effort in songwriting and musicianship. Although Cutters don’t have a Grammy winner on their hands, the band lays down an enjoyable record for all to indulge in.
One reason to check out Cutters first release would be the outstanding added samples. Another would be their keyboard player, Bill Maki. Tracks like “Genie”, “Happy Water”, and “Big Top” display Maki’s ability to bring more to the music with excellent fillers and quality rhythm. He strikes the right keys at the right times to sometimes be the lead instrument.
Tommy Berry delivers a complete guitar rock groove. Berry’s chord character would make some guitar geeks jealous. The drive behind “Belly Down” is an impressive acoustic jam. “As I Fly” is an acoustic number loaded with dominant chord structures that give a whole new power to the song. Listen for Cutters first single, “Satisfied”.
The lyrics and emotions poured into this record are a reflection of Cutters growing pains of life. “Freedom Run” is a quite a tune, it has a really good sound, with true and meaningful lyrics for the listener to reflect on. The theme concerns taking chances to chase down your dreams. “Run, run, and graduate three years late/Run, run, in your dad’s new Rolls Royce/Run, run, tests are multiple choice/ Freedom, run.” Good stuff.
