From the start, Cyclefly’s Generation Sap blasts off with a mix of Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Placebo, and though it isn’t fair to shoehorn these guys as mere clones, I have to say that “Crawl Down” burns like only Nirvana could. Vocalist Declan O’Shea blasts, “I am the pleasure you call pain/ the blast that lacerates your brain/ the undisputed king of shame/ I am the heroin you sought/ the bloody fetus you abort/ we all crawl down.”
“Supergod” is smashing. It’s odd, yet refreshing, when you consider that such a seemingly disturbed band created this beautiful and touching tune. “Whore” comes in with a sweet acoustic guitar accompanying O’Shea as he asks, “Would you be my whore?” In “Plastic Coated Man”, you’ll find O’Shea distorted and disoriented. Ending the album on a high is “Slaves”. You never get the feeling that the album drops off at any point along its journey.
If you liked the Smashing Pumpkins before they became cliche or find that Placebo tickles your fancy, then surely you need to check out Cyclefly. They’re just sadistic enough to toot your horn.
