Cypress Hill – Live at the Fillmore

Cypress Hill
Artist: Cypress Hill
Title: Live at the Fillmore
Label: Columbia
Rating: 7/10

My question is what happened to the Fillmore? It used to ring of a time when the biggest bands in the world would drop by and party until the morning light. They still seem to be partying there, but the sound has changed from drug-induced jam sessions to drug-induced hip-hop anthems.

Cypress Hill has a long and significant history in the world of hip-hop. Their influence is held far and wide. They are some of the original gangster rappers, introducing the sound that would bring groups like Rage Against The Machine and Limp Bizkit to the world.

Cypress Hill’s live release shows us why the white boys in the suburbs loved their album and the crews in the city felt the same. Their tight melodies with pounding basslines were irresistible. Songs like “Insane In The Brain”, “How I Could Just Kill A Man”, “Hand On The Pump”, and the new anthem “Superstar”, prove it. The crowd gets involved. B-Real gets involved. It’s all about the blood and sweat without tears.

The best thing is to hear all their early material mixed in with the rest of their more mature songs. From the straight sampled songs to the live vibe of guitar and drums, it’s a clincher. If you are a fan of Cypress Hill’s beginning, middle, or end you’ll be interested to hear the evolution live.
