Cypress Hill – IV

Cypress Hill
Artist: Cypress Hill
Title: IV
Label: Columbia
Rating: 7/10

Cypress Hill’s latest effort, simply titled IV, is a smoothly crafted album that represents Cypress’ maturity as well as their increasingly strong musical background. The changes of the past few years have not scarred the band in the least. In fact, they have maintained their status as one of rap’s top performers, but without the gimmicks that made them so popular with their first two releases.

Produced by DJ Muggs, IV is a step toward a more dynamic style of music, adopting elements from a variety of genres, while operating within the realm of hip-hop. It exhibits Cypress Hill’s previous funk and groove style, but does not rely on the power of their presence, as did past releases. Instead, they let their performance speak for itself. From the opening track, “Looking Through the Eye of a Pig”, to the funky but well-orchestrated “From the Window of My Room” and the Latino influence on “Tequila Sunrise’s”, IV draws from all of their already successful music without actually copying any of the old beats.

Guest appearances by Barron Ricks, MC Eiht, and Chace Infinite serve to enhance the already stellar cast. The overall experience of IV is a good one. It is definitely one of their best works to date. They have progressed from their earlier cut-throat style into a tight, moody, and sophisticated act that knows what to do and how to do it. IV is more hip than hip-hop. It is a much cleaner effort and offers a smoother, less relentless style than that which fans are accustomed to hearing from Cypress Hill.
