Cracker – Forever

Cracker
Artist: Cracker
Title: Forever
Label: Virgin
Rating: 4/10

Cracker has always been just kicking around doing very little in the way of chart action. Personally I never cared for any of their music even with hits like “Low”. Their hits compilation last year was laughable. There were barely one or two songs worth of being called hits. It was pure ego on either their part or the record labels.

Now Cracker believes they’ll last Forever? As usual I went in with my blinders on and ignored my feelings to try to see if Cracker could once and for all win me over.

Producer Mark Linkous has brought along a lovely, dark, and mysterious sound to Cracker. “Brides Of Neptune” is decent, if you can ignore the whole ‘guarded by monkeys’ nonsense. The problem again with these guys is that they get onto something good and always go and screw it up with some ignoramus statement. Obviously they thought the monkey thing was interesting enough to bring back for another track, not so surprisingly titled, “Guarded By Monkeys”. “Shine” to my chagrin does the same garbage that previous songs have which is to rhyme anything they can whether its good or not; ‘Russian acrobat’ to ‘Burt Bacharach’. That’s creative?

Everything about Forever is far reaching and never connects. Cracker sounds lyrically bankrupt. Their melodies prove to be interesting, but what’s underneath often comes as deep as anything those candy-corn pop bands give us today. Again Cracker proves they do very well at being average.
