As CEO and founder of BadBoy Entertainment, there are a lot of superlatives that could be used to describe Sean “Puffy” Combs. Most accurate, however, might be the term Renaissance Man.
Since starting his music career as an intern at Uptown Entertainment, Combs has redefined the concept of a record executive by managing success in multiple areas.
As such, the 26 year-old label boss is one of the few industry execs who can claim success as an A&R man, record producer, company founder and now, with his latest career move, chart-topping artist.
Still, despite the hype, Combs is very much a young brotha – albeit a smart one – who enjoys the things other peeps enjoy including performances
“A lotta people be like ‘you’re always up in all your videos. Always talking on your records and things like that.’” Combs explains. “It’s because for one, right, I’m young so I like to have fun. So it’s hard for me. Shit, I’m like a little kid in a candy store. I gotta sit around and watch everybody have candy and me not have any candy just because I’m the boss?”
With an album currently making waves and a roster full of chart-topping artists, Combs is unquestionably the boss of the candy store. It’s a position, however, he doesn’t take for granted, thanks to the knack that got him there in the first place – seeing the Big Picture: “What has made me more grounded over the years is my belief in God,” says Combs. “I always believed in God. I just started speaking about it more because I’ve had more success and I owe Him.” With a career filled with groundbreaking highlights – youngest A&R senior exec, first independent A&R, chart-topping label, solo album – there isn’t much else for Combs to do.
