Harry Connick, Jr. – Songs I Heard

Harry Connick, Jr.
Artist: Harry Connick, Jr.
Title: Songs I Heard
Label: Columbia
Rating: 6/10

Songs I Heard is an album of Harry Connick Jr. performing kids songs. Here we go again.

1. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious – Actually not entirely bad. I’m so very surprised.
2. The Lonely Goatherd – This is a little less listener-friendly.
3. Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead – One of many songs from the Wizard Of Oz that Jr. performs. The super long intro will tire kids with the overly done jazz work. I can’t figure out now if this is an album for kids or not. Kids like meat and this song has none.
4. Maybe – Okay, not really a kids track.
5. Pure Imagination/Candy Man – A nice surprise.
6. Golden Ticket/I Want It Now – Who would have thought the gem from Willy Wonka would get a new breath of life?
7. Oompa Loompa – This Wonka classic comes off odd at first, but Jr. saves the song if you are willing to listen on.
8. A Spoonful Of Sugar – Not very exciting.
9. Stay Awake – I’m trying to!
10. Something Was Missing – This is starting to go downhill.
11. You’re Never Fully Dressed – Good, but not good for this album.
12. Over The Rainbow – Good, but hard to measure against the classic.
13. The Jitterbug – Another good song that doesn’t seem to fit here.
14. Merry Old Land Of Oz – Minus the laugh and other odd sounding vocals, the song is good.
15. Edelweiss – Gorgeous.
16. Do-Re-Mi – Jr. carries his notes well, but the song is too jazzed up.

From independent tests, I found that kids don’t particularly care for this album. Perhaps it’s the adult sound or the lack of visual stimulus that the songs get in the movies. Songs I Heard is more of a novelty than anything.
