Cold – A Different Kind of Pain

Cold
Artist: Cold
Title: A Different Kind of Pain
Label: Lava
Rating: 7.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: “For Cold, music is…” Scooter pauses. “It’s real. It’s medicine. It’s therapy. And I think anybody, no matter what age you are, can be affected by it.” A Different Kind of Pain was recorded at Bearsville Studios in upstate New York and produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette. The slow, driving chorus on songs like “Ocean,” and “A Different Kind of Pain” belies the strife within the lyrics; and Baskette has handled it deftly.

THE GREAT:
“A Different Kind of Pain” – Sure, it might sound like a typical ballad from one of today’s rock bands—the difference is scooter’s voice and emotion.
“Back Home” – What sticks out is the melody. Scooter proves he can sing and brings the emotion Cold fans have come to expect.
“Feel It On Your Heart” – Fans of Cold may not like this because it isn’t as heavy as previous songs—I loved it.
“God’s Song” – This is one of the best songs on the album. The theme of heaven continues with “When Angels Fly Away.” This is certainly a radio single—whether Cold likes it or not.
“Tell Me Why” – I’m a bit on the fence about this song. It’s not actually great—but the melody is so good. The problem is the songs sounds very familiar.

THE AVERAGE:
The real deal is that any song that isn’t listed as being Great falls into this category. Some of the songs like “Anatomy of a Tidal Wave,” “Another Pill,” etc. may not be easily distinguished from one another.

THE BAD:
Nothing.

FRANKLY: Singer Scooter Ward proves he can sing. Fans of Staind will enjoy this release perhaps even more than old-school Cold fans. Most songs could be easily written off as wimpy but only for those with a narrow mind. A Different Kind of Pain isn’t great but it’s bad either. It would seem that Cold understands their sound and are content on staying in one spot. The only problem is a lack of diversity.
