The Chemical Brothers – Push The Buttons

The Chemical Brothers
Artist: The Chemical Brothers
Title: Push The Buttons
Label: Astrawerks
Rating: 6/10

CORPORATE LINE: The new Chemical Brothers album Push The Button is, as it should be, the same as all their others, and totally different. It’s a follow up to their first album, and a follow up to their last album, and a follow up to the ones in between. One or two of their previous albums are a follow up to this one.

THE GREAT:
“The Boxer” – Tim Burgess adds minimal lyrics to an extremely dynamic Chemical Brothers track featuring bizarre computer rock. Dig it!
“Hold Tight London” – Ultimately the tribal beat and lovely vocals by Anna-Lynne Williams create a hypnotizing concoction.

THE AVERAGE:
“Galvanize” – Q-Tip had it once and it’s too bad its not there anymore. The Chemical Brothers definitely bring a beat that will move a club but Q-Tip doesn’t add anything—he actually takes it down a notch.
“Believe” – This track featuring Kele Okereke is too monotonous and never quite unique.

THE BAD:
”Left Right” – Anwar is no No Limit soldier although he tries hard to prove himself competent. This is a bad attempt at securing an American style hip-hop hit.

FRANKLY: The Chemical Brothers paint with a broad brush and Push The Button is no different. There are a few tracks you might drop in your IPod and some that you could live without hearing again. You will Push The Button—but will you push play, fast forward, or stop?
