Cherie – Cherie

Cherie
Artist: Cherie
Title: Cherie
Label: Lava
Rating: 4/10

CORPORATE LINE: Born in 1984 in Marseille, France, Cherie is about to embark on a journey that will likely make her a household name. A mesmerizing beauty, Cherie can belt out a song like contemporaries from Pink to Sarah MacLachlan. With her first major-label release, Cherie is poised to become the muse of a new generation of music-lovers.

THE GREAT:
Nothing.

THE AVERAGE:
“I’m Ready” – It has a distinct Ace Of Base style.
“Say You Love Me” – An average run-of-the-mill pop ballad.
“Older Than My Years” – It’s apparent who Cherie is being styled as: Celine Dion. As bad as Cherie wants to be Celine she lacks the huge voice—but she has the same sappy production.

THE BAD:
“Fool” – Cherie tries really hard to make something out of nothing—and ends up being little more than a bad Celine Dion caricature.
“Betcha Never” and “Rush” – Plain awful.

FRANKLY: It’s not that songs like “It’s Your Love” are entirely bad and couldn’t be radio singles—they aren’t special. Cherie is quite ordinary and her lofty goal to sound like Dion doesn’t work.
