Everyone has heard Christina Aguilera’s”Genie In A Bottle”; it’s played everywhere seemingly non-stop. We all know it’s a huge hit, but what about the rest of the album?
On this, her self-titled album, the next track, “What A Girl Wants”, is R&B flavored, Aguilera’s voice saucy throughout. The chorus is catchy and contagious. “I Turn To You” is written by hit-maker Diane Warren and sounds like a Celine Dion song, but that’s somehow okay since it pushes Aguilera’s voice to a level I didn’t dream she could achieve. Bravo. “Come On Over (All I Want Is You)” is a frolicking track that marches on as it grabs you and tears you right out of your seat.
Aguilera slows it down on “Reflection”. I thought it was reminiscient of a Disney tune, then I noticed it was from the Mulan soundtrack. That goes to show you how much I’ve been paying attention to movie soundtracks. Her voice elevates this song, one that may have only been ordinary, up to another level. The chorus booms slowly and softly, yet with raw emotion that is impossible not to get caught up in. I’m glad they chose to include this track. The album is rounded out and nicely crafted. The Mariah Carey-ish “Love Will Find A Way” could surely be a huge hit single.
I have to admit that I didn’t expect much out of this album, but Christina Aguilera has proven herself to be an amazing singer. Aside from the great production and music, her voice is just wonderful.
