What do you get when you cross Lauryn Hill’s looks with Missy Elliott’s skills? Cha Cha. The album intro starts out giving props to Cha Cha, as an eighteen-year-old with a hard core flow and as someone who writes her own rhymes. The first track, “New Millenium (What Cha Wanna Do)”, acts more like a theme song. So, what do you need to do to have a hot single? Get a well-known artist to appear on your record, of course. Nas drops by and makes his presence felt on “M.O.M.M.Y”. This track is just what Missy Elliott was talking about on “Beat Biters”. This has Missy and Timbaland written all over it.
How many times can you play on a name? Cha Cha does it again and again, even naming another song after herself, “I Need You (Cha. Cha. Cha.)”. The song does boast a cool hook. “Who Makes It Hotter” free flows with the force a hurricane. The rhymes roll off of Cha Cha’s tongue with quickness. “It’s Like That” features Jim Crow and Trick Daddy. The rhymes are crazy and the beats slam. So why does an artist who seemingly has her finger on the pulse have to go and steal the chorus of Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses At Night”? I don’t have an answer, but this song is just as forgettable as the original.
Though Cha Cha can rap with the best of them, her songs aren’t up to par just yet. Still, for a freshman release, I’m quite impressed. Once Cha Cha has some experience behind her, I’m certain she will be a force to reckon with.
