Eliza Carthy has a voice that could stop you in your tracks, but it’s her lively fiddle that’s the real show-stopper. A truly simple but lush combination of majestic musical abilities combined with a skill for a catchy hook make Carthy a new source of inspiration.
You passionately fall headfirst into the diversity of each and every track. “Train Song” is a delight lost in search of all that makes you ache. “Beautiful Girl” is another source of spirit. With the devilish rise in notes and her voice dashed in and out of a synth charger, she takes you to the land from which the first two tracks came.
Pain and love linger in “Whole”. Ever building is the twenty-five-piece string section that follows through an opening that’s dirty but poignantly written throughout “The Company Of Men”.
I won’t attempt to compare Eliza Carthy to this singer or that. Her voice is as unique as her melodic trembling. Her spirit can rise or fall however she likes, and that alone is worth the journey.
