Slimm Calhoun is holding hands with this year’s biggest group, Outkast. But I don’t think Slimm would want us to compare him with them. Slimm does draw from the same pool, but as Outkast walks the deep end, Slimm walks around in the shallow waters.
“Red Clay” puts those who don’t know where they are in their place. “Dirt Work” is a run from the police, like what you might see on Cops. The story is pretty good and one of the album’s best performances. “It’s Ok” is tight as Andre 3000 from Outkast cuts loose. “The Cut Song” features the best beat. I could easily picture this track on Outkast’s Stankonia.
If you like Outkast, it doesn’t mean you are going to like this. Slimm Calhoun has his own style and that is that. Don’t walk in expecting Outkast because you will be disappointed. But if you have an open mind and room for a new hip-hop artist in your library, you won’t leave dissatisfied.
