Corporate Line: Universally renowned as America’s premiere rock band, Aerosmith’s tour promises to be nothing short of spectacular with the band performing classic hits from their 30+ year career, as well as new material from their upcoming album, Honkin’ On Bobo. Aerosmith’s 2004 arena tour comes on the heels of their co-headlining tour with Kiss, which received critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike, and was also one of 2003’s top-grossing concert outings.
The Good:
“Road Runner” – raucous rock ‘n’ roll—what’s not to like? Aerosmith sounds thirty years younger and Perry lights up Bo Diddley’s guitar track.
“Baby, Please Don’t Go” – Steven Taylor sings his heart out, but its Joe Perry’s guitar licks and virtuosity that steals the show. Wow—wear your headphones if you want to get your neck bent backwards.
“I’m Ready” – Taylor is nasty—in the coolest way possible. Perry tears it up and the band has never sounded better. It’s quite a flash in the past.
“Jesus is on the Main Line” – Great song that sounds like it was copied off the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.
The Average:
“The Grind” – Sexy, too bad Aerosmith turned this into an Aerosmith song circa the ‘90s.
“Back, Back Train” – Perry’s smoky, husky voice is perfect for the song—Taylor should stick with singing and leave the licks to Perry.
The Ugly: Nothing.
Frankly: Aerosmith’s covers are fantastic. Just when you think father time has had his way Aerosmith go and not only revive great songs from our past, but revive their own careers. Aerosmith sounds the best when doing covers as the young Aerosmith of the ‘70s, not the Aerosmith of the last half a decade. Honkin’ On Bobo is a swift kick in the ass.
