FILE UNDER: Teenage rock-pop boy part II.
CORPORATE LINE: Ryan Cabrera has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most compelling new voices on the modern pop scene. A gifted songwriter, singer, and musician, Ryan has also emerged as a captivating live performer and charismatic personality, winning over a legion of devoted fans from coast to coast. Now, Ryan is back with his eagerly awaited new collection, You Stand Watching. Produced by Ryan himself, the album offers dramatic evidence of Ryan’s rapid growth as both a composer and lyricist.
THE GREAT:
“Hit Me With Your Light” – Cabrera will impress a lot of teenage girls. Certainly Cabrera has shown an ability to grow.
THE AVERAGE:
“Shine On” – Is it me or could this be a Backstreet Boys song? Whether that is a good thing or not you can decide. It’s so close to being better than it is.
“From The Start” – The Falsetto isn’t working. The song sounds too familiar. It’s not easy to put a finger on it.
“Photo” – The intro piano is very similar to the outro for Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger.”
“Fall Baby Fall” – A nice song that you could imagine teen girls laying awake at night listening too—or being a track from any teen television show.
“Walking On Water” – A hint of Coldplay—minus the fantastic vocals of Chris Martin.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: I know there will be a lot of teenage girls egging my house tonight, but Ryan Cabrera is not great, yet. Cabrera is really on the verge. This is a big leap from the last record and he has a lot of songs here that have serious potential. They sound too silky when they could be a bit more soulful. I can see his appeal to teens. I feel it. I understand. But You Stand Watching doesn’t make me want to call my friends and tell them I found a great new album. Perhaps the third album will find Ryan Cabrera going from teen dream to a music machine.
