Cake has always created easy listening non-threatening songs, so Comfort Eagle is an appropriate name for an album that never makes you feel uncomfortable.
The first single, “Short Skirt/Long Jacket”, is cute, but not as strong as “Shadow Stabbing”, which is just a frolic through your closet. The usual odd track is still there, “Commissioning A Symphony In C”, which seems to go nowhere but around in a lovely circle. “Comfort Eagle” comes without words, I can’t make this track out at all.
Cake never seems to completely evolve since most tracks sound as broad and limited as the last. They create soft and huggable tracks that never really take you anywhere. Cake is often too vanilla or just plain white noise.
