CORPORATE LINE: The Zutons might have officially got together in the spring of 2002, but this is where the story really starts. 2004 will see the release of their spectacular debut album Who Killed The Zutons? It’s an eclectic, carnival of brilliance that will finally establish their unique identity for all to see. As their singer/guitarist – the 23 year-old David McCabe – points out this is the real sound of The Zutons.
THE GREAT:
“Zuton Fever” – Quirky, unique and as interesting as it is quirky.
“Long Time Coming” – It takes a while until you get some real meat to bite into.
“Dirty Dancehall” – A whole lot of fun.
“You Will You Won’t” – Rock is alive and well—interesting that it sounds like it came from the ‘70s.
THE AVERAGE:
“Railroad” – The Zutons mix it up well with a folk rock style. It’s an interesting narrative attempt to escape the usual rock-about-nothing song. “Moons and Horror Shows” proves the Zutons have a country fetish.
“Confusion” – If the Zutons threw in a slide guitar you’d swear it belonged to Nashville.
“Pressure Point” – Nothing extraordinary. Filler is usually reserved for the latter track listing.
THE BAD:
“Havana Gang Brawl” – Lousy singing makes an already weak song worse.
FRANKLY: Who Killed The Zutons isn’t going to overwhelm you with greatness. And no, the Zutons aren’t ‘geek rock’ so don’t be afraid to give them a spin. It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on the Zutons in the future!
