THE STORY: After “crashing” the super hero convention in Reno, the nigh invulnerable blue-clad super hero, the Tick, is deemed the protector of “The City.” On his first patrol he runs (more like “falls”) into Arthur, an accountant in a moth costume. They soon strike up a partnership. When the villainous and muffled idea men threaten to flood The City, the Tick and Arthur come to the rescue. Along the way we meet Die Fledermaus, American Maid, and the Caped Chameleon. The Human Bullet cameos.
THE REVIEW: I watched The Tick when it first came out on television and enjoyed the sense of humor and creative characters. The Tick himself is hilarious as he tries to drop intelligent speeches and metaphors only to sound more like a bumbling idiot. The Tick represents superheroes to the highest degree of cockiness with a lack of intelligence or emotion except when he defeats a villain. The great thing about The Tick is how he uses his powers for anything—not only to defeat evil. He’ll break and smash things to accommodate whatever he likes or doesn’t seem to think about—like entering a building through the wall. Tick’s sidekick Arthur however is the complete opposite—a wimpy, feeble little fellow. Interestingly, The Tick is supposed to be the star of the show and yet the brilliant cast of characters outshines him nearly every time.
THE EXTRAS: Absolutely no extras.
FRANKLY: The Tick is still funny a decade later. The Tick style has been recreated in movies and television shows where the hero is an egomaniac who forgets who he is fighting for, even though he’d tell you it’s the people—Team America or American Dad.
