Satan’s Playground DVD

Satan’s Playground
Cast: Felissa Rose
Studio: Warner Bros.
Rating: 5.5/10

THE STORY: With a cast of actors from 1970s and ’80s horror classics, SATAN’S PLAYGROUND has all the proper ingredients for a gore-filled good time. Felissa Rose (SLEEPAWAY CAMP), Ellen Sandweiss (EVIL DEAD), and Edwin Neal (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) star as a family venturing into the wilderness on a vacation in New Jersey’s pine barrens. But as they get deeper and deeper into the woods, they are forced, one by one, into conflict with the locals and the monster known as “The Jersey Devil.”

THE REVIEW: Satan’s Playground plays on different movies and other fears that viewers will feel as though they’ve been there and done that before—like breaking down on the highway and end up needing the help only to find out you’ve fallen into the hands of a lunatic. That alone doesn’t help Satan’s Playground get off to a good start. The fact that the movie went straight to DVD also says a lot about the usual quality of such movies—and Satan’s Playground isn’t great but it is full of creepy fun.

The cast does their necessary duty of being afraid and trying to escape the insanity. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of bad acting and lame scenes—there are however moments where you are easily absorbed by the horror. Even for a low budget movie, Satan’s Playground is certainly creepy as hell.

THE EXTRAS: The commentary by Writer/Director Dante Tomaselli offers some insight if you have tolerance to sit through it all. The featurette “Satan’s Playground: Behind the Scenes” and “Dante Tomaselli and The Jersey Devil” are passable production look-sees.

FRANKLY: The fact that Satan’s Playground doesn’t try to be a big Hollywood production actually helps the movie. The gritty, grimy production of Satan’s Playground shines in all its crummy glory.
