CORPORATE LINE: Punky is back and growing up fast! Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster) and George Gaynes (Henry Warnimont) star in another season of the unforgettable hit show.
Punky is faced with a new set of dilemmas, including boy problems and all that goes with them. It is in this classic collection that Punky becomes a gossip columnist, skips school, steals a pig and imagines life as a dog!
With best friends Cheri and Margaux, and her ever-present dog buddy, Brandon – who has a personality all his own – Punky will once again charm everyone she meets.
Special features include 2 1/2 hours of the popular Saturday morning cartoon It’s Punky Brewster, featuring many of the voices from the original show.
THE REVIEW: The good and the bad about Punky Brewster was the way that the show tried to conquer the issues of the day. The negative was it was too often heavy handed and over the top. There are some interesting stories but too many are depressing and then covered with cotton candy as they get wrapped up nicely in a bow.
The topics such as drugs, alcoholism, and divorce are helpful for kids to get through their own tough situations. Punky Brewster is a show from the ‘80s and it never feels timeless which hurts the show.
THE EXTRAS: Bonus episodes of the animated spin-off It’s Punky Brewster.
FRANKLY: The one thing about Punky Brewster that screams about what went wrong with family television is how sweet the show is overall. Even during the more depressing episodes it has a silver lining. Too many shows today are about the bad and never seem to care about wrapping anything up. It’s not realistic, but kids don’t always want the grim reality. Who does? The sweetness of the show and innocence is sadly missing today. Too many shows today call themselves family shows when in reality there is cursing, sexual innuendo and more you wouldn’t want a five year old seeing. Punky Brewster is the polar opposite of today’s family shows.
