THE REVIEW: Anyone that has wanted a peek behind the curtain of the Playboy Mansion get exactly that. We are invited into Hugh Hefner’s house and learn about his love life and girlfriends. The show surely attracted people, especially males, initially because they hoped to see woman in a more intimate setting. What happened interestingly enough is the show turned out not to be about T&A but about some interesting personalities, Hef’s three girlfriends, Holly, Bridget, and Kendra.
There is a lot of great editing that creates tension that may or may not be there—but its fun to see Holly get jealous of every other girl, Kendra being late and a tom boy and Bridget being the most down to earth and normal of the three. Best of all we don’t have Hef’s swallowing up every scene. We already know enough about him that the show does a good job of focusing on the three girls who take up most of his life.
One of the issues is what’s lacking. A lot of the show is about dogs and all of the events Hef and the girls go too—which essentially is all about promoting Playboy as a company. We don’t always get to see the spats and issues that are underlining between the girls and all the chaos that is happening at any given time around the mansion. Maybe the mansion is drama free—but we’ll never know the truth.
THE EXTRAS: The first extra is an optional uncensored audio commentary that offers a little more in the way of behind-the-scenes information. The next extra is a “Never-before-seen” pilot presentation. There are episode promos and deleted scenes that are obvious filler needing to be excised. The personality tests for Holly, Bridget and Kendra are mostly filler as is the photo gallery.
FRANKLY: Girls Next Door – Season One is a lot of fluff—but it’s a guilty pleasure.
