3rd Rock from the Sun: The Complete First Season DVD

3rd Rock from the Sun
Cast: John Lithgow
Studio: Anchor Bay
Rating: 8/10

CORPORATE LINE: A science-fiction themed sitcom, 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN looked at the absurdity of human behavior and society from a literal outsider’s perspective. Four alien beings have been transported to Earth in order to more closely study mankind. Landing in the town of Rutherford, Ohio, the quartet each takes on a human appearance, forming the “Solomon” family: leader Dick (John Lithgow), sophomoric Harry (French Stewart), man-trapped-in-a-woman’s-body, Sally (Kristen Johnston), and eldest member (in the form of a teenage boy), Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). As they set out to examine the habits of the humans around them, the team experiences the human emotions of love and loss, and encounter many comic misunderstandings from their too-literal readings of human words and actions. Using clever writing and acting to convey “alien-ness” rather than gaudy special effects, 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN was one of television’s most unique comedy series. THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON contains the original 20 episodes of the program.

THE SHOW: There is no denying this was a great cast. They work so well together that it’s hard to believe the show ran only six seasons. This was truly a solid cast.

John Lithgow is brilliant as Dr. Dick Solomon who is actually the high commander of the aliens. Lithgow’s body language is hilarious. It’s impossible to imagine anyone else in this role. French Stewart is a scene stealer as the dimwitted Harry.

Each character is fun to watch and fill roles that are always interesting. They are continually developing and that is one of the true reasons to watch. Not only do they develop but each day is something new as they learn to be humans—it never tires.

Some of the best episodes are “Brains and Eggs” which is the show’s first episode. “The Dicks They Are A Changin” is brilliant involving Mary believing to have met Dick in the ‘60s. Another great one is “Post-Nasal Dick” which involves Dick getting a cold. “Lonely Dick” includes guest star Phil Hartman.

FRANKLY: The first season of 3rd Rock from the Sun is a classic. Its fun to watch each episode as each alien tries to feel their way through life as humans.
