I pondered this statement all of the way home, but it rings true: Toy Story 2 may be the best comedy sequel I’ve ever seen.
Note that I rated it a perfect ten. I’m as stunned as you are. I’m a grown man who didn’t even have a child with him, and I still laughed like an eight-year-old. Normally I wouldn’t feel obliged to explain my rating, but I need to here. First, the script is damn good, much better than that of the first movie. Some of the other toys get greater supporting roles to the main characters, Buzz Lightyear and Woody. There are also a few additional characters that are just wonderful. One is a wild little rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl. You’ve got to love her and a cute horse that Woodie seemed to have a history with that we never knew. The graphics and animation are out of this world. I just cannot fathom the amount of work it took to make this movie so perfect. The most astonishing thing is when you spot Woody walking on Al McWhiggan (voice by Wayne Knight). Watch the skin textures. Brilliant!
I won’t spoil the plot and ruin a film that everyone should see for many reasons. The main reason being entertainment value alone. And then just to admire the piece of art that Pixar has created. Many sequels fall down flat on their own faces. They almost never measure up to the original, but I was entertained throughout this entire film.
Do you need more proof? I was in a theater that was absolutely full of children with ages that can’t even be measured in double digits and they never let out a peep. The only noise you could hear was laughter and clapping, as the little toys became heroes time and again. That is impressive. If Toy Story 2 can keep a full house of kids ranging from preschool to elementary school from fidgeting and losing interest, just imagine the amount of entertainment it offers to someone who can appreciate all the nuances of this film. If you think cartoons are for kids, you must have forgotten how to laugh. Truly, this may be the best comedy sequel I’ve ever seen.
