The Shield: The Complete Second Season

The Shield
Cast: Michael Chiklis
Studio: Fox
Rating: 9/10

Corporate Line: 2002 Emmy Award Winner for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series 2002 Television Critics Association Award Winner for Individual Achievement in Drama. Michael Chiklis returned to series television this year in the groundbreaking drama THE SHIELD starring as “Detective Vic Mackey,” leader of the elite Strike Team unit, who operates the precinct strike force under his own set of rules.

The Good: Quite possibly one of the best TV shows today. FX has a winner and thankfully for those of us who are too busy watching the big three, honestly forgetting The Shield is FX we can catch it on DVD!

The Shield is gritty and Michael Chiklis is closer to what I’d like to think of a cop than that knows it all Vincent D’Onofrio on Law & Order – that know it all. Chiklis provides the sort of emotion you’d expect from an officer of the law. He wears it on his sleeve – you love him and hate him. You can’t say the same for the sexy stars of Law & Order who in every episode seem to start fresh with the enthusiasm of a rookie. Chiklis has a great cast that pushes his performances to hell and back. Being an officer isn’t easy and The Shield doesn’t pretend it is.

What is amazing is how the second season of The Shield almost tops the first season – near impossible to do. What is great about having it on DVD is the fact I could run through three episodes – or more – in a row without interruption. Isn’t that how it should be?

The Extras: There are wonderful commentaries on each episode. What was exciting was how passionately those involved talked about how they tried to make the show better – which has to get your mouth watering for season three.

There are 38 deleted scenes – a few from each episode. What was probably my favorite was the roundtable between the directors.

Disc One
The Quick Fix
Dead Soldiers
Partners
Carte Blanche

Disc Two
Greenlit
Homewrecker
Barnstormers
Scar Tissue

Disc Three
Co-Pilot
Coyotes
Inferno
Breakpoint

Disc Four
Dominoes Falling

Frankly: The Shield is the best cops and robbers show there is.
