Signs

Signs
Cast: Mel Gibson
Studio: Touchstone
Rating: 5.5/10

Film Studio Synopsis: Signs, a thriller set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania focusing on the mysterious appearance of a five-hundred-foot design of circles and lines carved into a family’s crops. Mel Gibson stars as Graham Hess, the family patriarch, who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the unfolding mystery. Joaquin Phoenix is Merrill Hess, brother to Graham and a former minor league baseball star.

Good: There is a fun level of creepiness. I remember the night I saw it I had to go and lock the door in the garage and I made sure every light in the house and garage were on, even then I was still jumpy. So it sticks with you.

Bad: The ending is completely hokey. From the lack of commitment to the finale via special effects where they leave you drowned in a squint of sunlight to the absolute lack of commitment by the viewer leaves this hanging. There is no feeling of investment in Gibson or the rest of the cast and that hurts.

Frankly: The whole crop circle phenomenon is something we’ve long grown bored of, perhaps five years ago we’d find this film a good deal more interesting. It reminds one of Death To Smoochy which came about five or so years too late after the whole Barney frenzy died. I’m not sure if this is Hollywood’s fault or not. Personally, creepiness aside, it’s the kind of film you watch once but probably won’t revisit again.
