Slap Shot 2 is the sequel to the 1977 classic finds Stephen Baldwin in the original’s Paul Newman role, as Sean Linden, the veteran player/coach of the lowly Charlestown Chiefs, a minor league hockey team on the verge of extinction.
In the new, shinier version, the Chiefs are sold to a new owner, Sean and the players are optimistic until they find their role in the new league is to play the Washington Generals to another team’s, the IceBreakers, Globetrotters. To add to their humiliation, the Chiefs are saddled with a female coach (Jessica Steen), pushing the team far past their breaking point. To revive the team’s old spirit, the Hanson brothers (played by the same actors from the original) are brought back to fire up the team and put the hurt on the IceBreakers.
This film couldn’t hold a candle to the original. Stephen Baldwin couldn’t hold Newman’s jock. The Hanson brothers are twenty-five years older and the jokes are just as stale.
This movie is horrible on every level. Awful from the terrible script to the downright annoying characters. The plot is poor. The jokes aren’t funny. This film sucks. I’d like to send some awards out to the worst actors in a movie: It’s a tie between Stephen Baldwin and Gary Busey. Busey’s mean and dirty team owner character is painful to watch. Can someone give this guy some caffeine or anything to wake him from that walking coma?
Here is why I gave this film a total of 2/10 instead of 1/10. First, they used real hockey players who showed some neat tricks on the ice. Second, there is no other reason, actually I better finish this before the film gets downgraded a point, or two.
