Wow. That is the first thing that came to mind as I walked out of the theater. There are great parts and parts that are average, but the wow factor is certainly high.
Based on the legendary flagship character of Marvel comics, this is the story of Peter Parker, a student living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben after the death of his parents when he was very young. He’s an avid student with a much-less-than-stellar social life and a knack for bad luck. When a freak accident miraculously grants him incredible spider-like abilities, in effect, it makes him into the amazing Spider-Man. Peter will find that there’s a thin line between an ordinary man and an extraordinary hero; and he’ll have to be the one to cross it.
The on going theme revolves around a good bit of advice that Peter Parker gets from his Uncle: “With great power comes great responsibility.”
When Spider-Man isn’t swinging around the city the film does start slowing down a bit. Sam Raimi does a good job trying to balance the intense with the rest. The film feels like a comic book and that is a great compliment. It’s what other movies in the past, particularly Batman had lacked.
The one thing Batman did better than Spider-Man however was bringing us good bad guys, Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin is a little cheesy.
As for the rest of the cast; Maquire as Parker/Spider-Man is quite good. When I first heard he was going to be the star I had a lot of reservations. He sold me. Kirsten Dunst is extremely stiff in a part that needs more dynamics. J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson steals the show. He is hilarious!
Even with a few lacking cast members and a paper-thin plot Spider-Man still swings in and finds you begging for more.
