Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones

Star Wars II
Cast: Ewan McGregor
Studio: Fox
Rating: 7.5/10

Well we know that Director/writer/everything George Lucas listens to fans because the most-annoying movie character ever, Jar Jar Binks is muffled and back are R2-D2 and C-3PO! Yeah!

The film is faster, brighter, and slicker than The Phantom Menace. The problem is that even with all the technology it still doesn’t have the spirit of Empire or the original Star Wars.

The film starts ten years after the events of The Phantom Menace, not only has the galaxy undergone significant change, but so have our familiar heroes Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) as they are thrown together again for the first time since the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo. Anakin has grown into the accomplished Jedi apprentice of Obi-Wan, who himself has transitioned from student to teacher. The two Jedi are assigned to protect Padmé whose life is threatened by a faction of political separatists. As relationships form and powerful forces collide, these heroes face choices that will impact not only their own fates, but the destiny of the Republic.

So as you can tell there is a problem for the Jedi’s. And its not Stormtroopers, its the acting and some of the lamest lines in Star Wars history. The love fest between Padmé and Anakin is weak. McGregor as Obi-Wan is the one saving grace. Christensen and Portman bring nothing to this film and never feel convincing. Too bad. I guess we were spoiled by Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford.

Thankfully the ending comes with a flurry of fighting. Yodi gets nasty with the lightsaber and brings nonstop entertainment for almost an hour. If it weren’t for the final battle this film would have registered nothing but a snooze. However as a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m glad I still have the original triology to look back upon.
