Sweet November

Sweet November
Cast: Keanu Reeves
Studio: Warner Bros.
Rating: 4/10

I’m too young to remember the original Sweet November from 1968 by the same film company, Warner Bros.

I hate to get into dogging any one person, but Keanu Reeves couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag if his life depended on it. Charlize Theron is a bit more convincing, but this movie isn’t exactly an actor’s showcase. Theron’s character Sara is just not believable, and whether that is bad acting or bad writing I can’t say for sure.

Sweet November is just too predictable. It sports a theme long hammered into the viewers in our film industry. I’m tired of the woman saving a man who doesn’t know who he really is. He has this wonderful soul lost and found by this woman. The man is seen as someone who only cares about business and the woman is the only one who can see the love inside. This has become so cliché, overdone and boring.

The building tension between the plot and characters never really pulls you in. It will make the most sympathetic tear up, but I had a hard time feeling any sense of pain or joy for them. The idea is simple, and that isn’t necessarily bad, but here it isn’t quite pulled off. Sweet November is more of a bitter harvest.
