Red Planet has the makings of a huge sci-fi thriller. Usually when you mix together a great cast like Val Kilmer, Benjamin Bratt, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Tom Sizemore, not to mention a hell of a lot of cool effects, youd have a pot full of fun.
Red Planet is chock full of action. It begins about fifty years from today. Earth is over- populated and filling up like a trash bin neglected for weeks. A mission was unveiled previously to make Mars hospitable to human life, allowing mankind to colonize there, but something has gone wrong and its up to a crew of deft misfits to save the day.
Do you see a trend with that description? I mean, isn’t there always a woman that someone falls in love with? The guy who is too cool for everyone? The hunk. How about the really intelligent guy? And of course there is the one who sacrifices it all for the greater good. Cliches? You betcha. But what else is new? After all, this is a Hollywood movie and apparently there is a simple formula that they must follow. Why they continue to put out the same movies with a different coating is beyond me.
Its all about the climax. A climactic tremor here, one there, another here, one over there, they slip them in at just the right intervals so that we don’t get completely bored. And just when you start getting up to run to the bathroom, something big happens. Red Planet offers no serious twists, just hurdles that the good guys must overcome. Its Hollywood, so you probably already know the ending. But don’t let that discourage you; just like Twinkies, the good stuff is in the middle.
