Reefer Madness

Reefer Madness
Cast: Neve Campbell
Studio: Fox
Rating: 0/10

CORPORATE LINE: A spectacular musical made for Showtime, and based on the most infamous propaganda film ever, REEFER MADNESS is a hilarious, campy extravaganza with glorious performances turned in by an all-star cast. A straitlaced youth, Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell), is seduced by the irresistible new drug, marijuana, and soon his girlfriend, Mary (Kristin Bell), proves equally unable to withstand its lure. While Jimmy starts down a path of crime and murder, Mary taps into her debaucherous side, and develops an insatiable sexual appetite. Stunning costumes and dance sequences are accompanied by witty dialogue in a staging that is as irresistible as the drug itself. Co-starring are Neve Campbell (SCREAM), Alan Cumming (X-2), Steven Weber (TIMECODE), and Ana Gasteyer (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, MEAN GIRLS).

THE MOVIE: You’d have to be high to enjoy this film. Reefer Madness: The Musical could only be enjoyed by those who are wasted beyond all comprehension. The casting is terrible. We are supposed to believe adults are teens and then buy the story on top of that? What an incredible waste of an hour.

THE EXTRAS: The commentary is impossible to sit through. Director Andy Fickman, producers Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy, and actors Christian Campbell and Amy Spanger enjoy themselves as they make fun of the other cast and each other. The real joke is on them as they’re in one of the worst movies of all time and never even realize it.

“Grass Roots: Behind the Scenes” mixes interviews with information on the original film “Reefer Madness.” Thankfully the original film is here in all its glory.

FRANKLY: Even if this was intended to be bad it shoots so far past bad that even bad movies would be embarrassed being mentioned alongside Reefer Madness.
