Judas Priest: Rising In The East DVD

Judas Priest: Rising In The East

Rating: 8/10

Recently someone asked me if bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden still had credibility. My answer was resolutely “Hell yeah,” especially where Judas Priest is concerned. And this live DVD is proof-positive that the newly reunited band has still got it. Rather than resting on its laurels and settling for “Greatest Hits” status, the band released a scorcher of a new album earlier in the year that reaffirmed its knack for crafting rock-solid songs and executing them with polished precision. And of course, there are also the unmatched vocals of Rob Halford.

The DVD was recorded in Japan during the band’s recent world tour. New material like “Revolution” and “Judas Is Rising” sits well alongside Priest staples like “Painkiller,” “Breaking The Law” and “Exciter.” Energy levels are high and the band sounds as heavy as ever, even looking almost as lively as it did in its prime 20 years ago. The only downside is somewhat spotty sound in areas and the lack of any bonus materials. But other than that, it’s an entertaining view—especially for those of us who cut our teeth on traditional metal, the stuff that seems to be coming back now. So yeah, I’d say it’s still viable.
